Open data on US traffic camera feeds
This repo is a small open dataset about public traffic and road-condition cameras run by US government agencies: which official feeds exist, where the cameras are, and how reliably each state's fleet actually serves a live image. The data is aggregated by LiveTrafficCam, which checks every camera on a rolling schedule with real HTTP requests.
The files
| File | What it is |
|---|---|
data/sources.json | Registry of official feed sources: state DOT APIs, 511 platforms, FAA WeatherCams. Name, kind, state, official site, terms, attribution line. |
data/cameras.geojson | Camera locations as GeoJSON points with route, live status and agency attribution. A sample of up to 200 cameras per state; the source API caps each query. |
data/uptime-summary.json | Full measured per-state counts: cameras tracked, live/stale/dead now, 14-day check success. Mirrors the live camera uptime report. |
data/uptime/history.csv | The same per-state numbers as a weekly time series from 2026-08-31: one row per state per refresh, with the 14-day check counts. Raw weekly reports sit in data/uptime/snapshots/. Each row has a quality flag; filter on clean before comparing. Use this for reliability over time. |
data/uptime/exclusions.json | Dated windows where the numbers do not mean agency reliability: our own checker incidents, changes to how live or the fleet is defined, and known agency outages, each with its reason. The quality flags in the history file come from this. |
data/slices/sierra-chain-control.geojson | Curated slice for Tahoe-bound drivers: up to 60 cameras on the Caltrans chain-control stretches of I-80 (Donner Pass) and US-50 (Echo Summit) and the Nevada approach to Reno, with agency attribution and a link to the page where each camera's live status is. Built from places that have pages, never a whole state. |
A weekly GitHub Action re-pulls the generated files;
sources.json is maintained by hand.
